Wingdammer March 2008
This is the first email version of the newsletter from the Sacramento Yacht Club, including commentary from the Officers, articles on upcoming and past events, and other items of interest to members. Article contributions are welcome and should be sent to: wingdammer@sacyc.com. It is hoped that this modest beginning will inspire shipmates to volunteer, either as editors or by article contributions, and make this effort grow.

Christie and I have been members of SYC since 1995. It amazes me about how much better the club gets every year. The building, marina, grounds all have improved steadily all these years. It is the constant and dedicated work done by the volunteers of this club that make it happen. Day after day and year after year. This year we are taking a giant step forward by developing a Financial Planning Committee which will carry us into the next decade by coming up with a long term blueprint for further growth.

I encourage you to follow the workings of this committee and review their reports as submitted.

Shipmates,

If you haven’t been around the club lately you are missing a lot. Our TGIF’s have been well attended and the food has been great. Our Sunday morning breakfasts have been great as well. Our breakfasts generally have a lot of our senior members show up. Take the opportunity to introduce yourself and engage in a conversation with them. They have a lot to share about SYC in the past, how it has changed and how it is very much the same.

Our galley crews have included the Pam & Mark Labella with Paul Hairell & Alicia Ortiz, Bill & Andee Justis with Judy Sheets, Ron Nycum, Dave & Hope Mulcahy and Dave Hoppe, Joe & Jamie O’Neil with Pete & Renee Yager, Shirleen Von Hoffman with Jonathan Barker and Joe & Sharon Mayes, and Erika & Scott Keefer and lastly, the veteran Best, Bettis, Barker and Cain team. According to Shipmate Susie Bettis the Chili cook-off was the best ever. Over 130 people attended. After a few hours of eating chili several shipmates asked that we open the doors and windows, hmmm, guess it was getting warm inside. What a Superbowl. The festivities at the club included “potluck” eats and special drink creations at the bar with our favorite bartender “Josie”. Special thanks to shipmate Ron Sheets who brought in a huge screen and audio system for all to enjoy.

Your membership fees are at work. We are doing some structural repairs to the clubhouse and also some galley improvements. See Club Manager Paul Taylor for a tour. Remember your club is available for private events, such as reunions, weddings, company parties etc.; see Paul for details. To assist manager Paul, and me, if you know you’re coming to an event let us know. It helps to manage the galley so our crews know how many to cook for.

Support your club.

Shipmates,
If you didn’t make it to the Fellowship dinner you missed a great time. We had an unbelievable meal cooked by Larry and Marcy Best, Frank and Susan Bettis, Lew and Alice Cain, Jonathan and Nancy Barker. The special servers were Paulie Ayres, Twyla Buzarellos and Kevin Rogers. I want to thank Kevin Hubble and Mike Vincent for a terrific job on the decorations and Ross Rydell for manning the ticket table.

The Olympics were announced as the theme for the opening day parade, “One River One dream”. The cruising schedule was also announced.

I want to invite everyone to make as many cruises as you can. It is going to be a great cruising year and we need you to make it even better. If you haven’t been on a cruise you need to experience the fun and camaraderie that can only be found on a cruise. There will be lots of new and exciting venues this year, so come on out and have fun with your boat.

Other Officer Reports

  • Measurer
The beginning of the year is always busy for the Measurer. The SYC Roster is delayed a bit due to our efforts to have the most accurate member information before it goes to print. The Blue Member Board that lists our Officers, Appointments, Committees and member’s names will be completed this week and on display at the Club soon.

I have completed filling out new membership cards for all members. The new membership cards are being handed out at Club functions. Please call the Club Office and ask that your membership card be mailed to you if you are in need of it for travel.

The best way for our Club to gain membership is to invite your friends to join. We have membership applications and the membership brochure available in the Clubhouse near the cruise and fishing bulletin boards. Please remember that the Measurer conducts a prospective new member orientation and tour on the Sunday following the monthly membership meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the Clubhouse. Your prospective member guests can enjoy a free breakfast while attending the orientation. Please contact me at junayg@hotmail.com or (916) 300-2850 if you know someone that is interested in membership.

The SYC membership card is a nice benefit for members because you can use it to gain entrance to other yacht clubs while you are traveling.
As an example, my husband and I were in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in December and were able to meet with Sacramento Yacht Club members Charles and Clista Prather at the Vallarta Yacht Club in Nuevo Vallarta. They are members of Vallarta Yacht Club and live on their boat Shilo, a 49 foot Grand Banks Trawler. I was able to give the Prathers their new membership cards while visiting with them.

King Neptune visits SYC

The SYC fleet was visited by King (PR) Neptune recently, who gave the "official" blessing to those of us who have re-named our boats. Shipmates came from near and far for the blessing, well, maybe also for the free beer... and the potluck was very popular. Click here for Neptune's own description, as told to Peter Robertson...

SYC Chil Cookoff

Started by Past Commodore Frank Thall ( and who can forget his cap with the implanted forK), this years Chili Cookoff, spearheaded by Sue Bettis, was a major sucess. It featured probably the most ever chili entries.

Even Frank Bettis was happy - unable to grouch about the inadequate electrical circuits thanks to Ron Sheets and his handiwork.

As usual, Marilyn Phelps and Linda Colson led the cornbread brigade.

A complete list of winners is below.
